HIGH POINT Mr. Walter Martin Haarsgaard, 99, died Wednesday, August 8, 2007, at High Point Regional Hospital.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. on Saturday, August 11, in Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church by Father Anthony J. Gilborges, O.S.F.S. and Father John J. Kelly, O.S.F.S. con-celebrant. Interment will be at a later date in the Holy Savior Cemetery in York, Pa.
Mr. Haarsgaard was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on June 24, 1908, the son of Peter and Jennie Jacobson Haarsgaard. He was employed in furniture marketing and merchandising for many years. During his vice-presidency with W & J Sloane Furniture Retailers, he was named "Outstanding Furniture Retailer" in the New York Area. He moved to High Point 17 years ago from Cape Cod, Maine. Mr. Haarsgaard was later associated with Lane Furniture Company. In 1929, he married Catherine McCamphill. Together they shared life for 57 years. They traveled abroad on several occasions until her death on March 2, 1988. He was also preceded in death by a son, Owen Haarsgaard.
Surviving are two daughters, Anne Hale of Midland Park, N.J., and Jane Cox of Ellicott, Md.; four sons, Deacon Wally J. Haarsgaard of High Point, with whom he made his home, Robert Haarsgaard of Mendham, N.J., Tom Haarsgaard of Boca Raton, Fla., and Edward Haarsgaard of Greenville, S.C. He has 18 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 until 8:30 p.m. Friday evening at Sechrest Funeral Service on E. Lexington Avenue.
