GREENSBORO — Alexander Mitchell, Jr., 87, of Greensboro, NC passed away Friday, February 8, 2013 at W.G. Hefner VA Medical Center in Salisbury after living a full and active life, having worked as an engineer, contractor and real estate broker well into his 80's.

He was born October 16, 1925 in Birmingham, AL, the son of the late Alexander Mitchell, Sr. and Maragaret McCallun Mitchell.

Mr. Mitchell was a combat wounded Army veteran, having served under General Patton during WWII and received several medals. He was a member of the Masons and Shriners, as well as the First Presbyterian Church in Bridgeport, CT.

He spent the last several years at the Hefner Center in Bldg. 42 and was affectionately named "Papa Smurf". The family would like to thank the staff at the VA for their exceptional and loving care.

He is survived by Dr. Steve Mitchell of Longs, SC, Clifford "Kip" Mitchell of North Myrtle Beach, SC, Susan Peach and three grandchildren: Tommy, Christina and Nicholas Peach all of High Point, NC and a brother Earl Mitchell of Akron, OH.

Graveside service: 1 p.m. Friday February 15, 2013 at Salisbury National Cemetery, 501 Statesville Blvd., Salisbury, NC 28144. Full military honors will be accorded by the Lyerly Volunteer Honor Guard.

Memorials: In lieu of flowers donations may be made to W.G. Hefner VA Medical Center; 1601 Brenner Avenue; Salisbury, NC 28144.
