BURLINGTON Mrs. Phyllis Burns Needham, 91, of Burlington, NC, accepted an invitation from her Heavenly Father on January 19, to attend a joyous reunion of family and friends in heaven.
Phyllis was born on July 30, 1921, in Greensboro, NC. She was the sweet baby daughter of Paul Allen and Myrtle Burns. Phyllis grew up under the watchful eyes of an older sister Dottie and brother Paul, which was a full time job for them. Phyllis, however, still found the time to be mischievous and would sneak out at every opportunity to go "scooterpootin" and roller skating. As far as the mystery of brother Paul's missing Indian Head penny collection, even after all these years...Phyllis would only smile.
During WWII she worked at an Army Supply base in Greensboro (O.R.D.) where she drove a truck. Phyllis always said she drove a truck that "bent in the middle and went toot, toot, toot". Phyllis could be spotted after hours at the Diamond Drive-In doing a mean jitterbug.
In later years Phyllis married Jack Needham of Burlington who was one of the greatest blessings of her life. They enjoyed 45 years of marriage which included two daughters, three grandsons and four great-grandchildren.
Phyllis treasured every trip to the beach - summer or winter - it was a good time with the girls! She was an ingenious domestic designer and a wizard with her sewing machine and knitting needles. Phyllis was a devilish domino player and a fierce competitor in the local girl's weekly card circle. These were a few of her favorite things.
Meeting her in heaven will be her husband Jack Needham and sister Dorothy Burns Connelly, along with all her loving family and friends who have been anxiously awaiting her arrival.
Those who love her and will miss her are her brother, Paul Burns (Ann) and their children Paul Duker Burns and Judy Adams (Jake) and grandchildren Paul and Blake Burns and Jordan and Brooke Adams of Orlando, FL. Her two daughters, Michele Wilson (Charlie) of Burlington and Suzanne Hunt (Billy) of Raleigh. Grandchildren, Todd Mitchell (Patricia) of Burlington, Alan Mitchell (Sammey) of Huntersville, NC and Will Hunt of Raleigh. Great-grandchildren, Alex Mitchell of Burlington and Carson and Avery Mitchell of Huntersville, NC.
A special thank you to God for sending us two wonderful caregivers in Geneen Brayboy and Debbie Hunt. Also to the sweet angels from Hospice, who during our mother's illness were always full of smiles, patience, hugs and love that we all so desperately needed.
Services will be held 12 p.m., Wednesday, January 23, at the Rich & Thompson Chapel in Burlington with Cheryl Bridges, Chaplain officiating. Burial will follow at Pine Hill Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Rich & Thompson Funeral & Cremation Service in Burlington from 11 a.m. until 12 p.m., prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Amedisys Hospice, 1111 Huffman Mill Rd., Suite 102, Burlington, NC 27215.
