COLFAX — Mr. James David "J.D." Shields age 91 of Colfax passed away Monday, January 7, 2013 at his home. He was born September 27, 1921 in Guilford County to Ernest Eugene and Temisia Elizabeth Jones Shields. He was a World War II veteran, servicing in the South Pacific as an Air Craft Mechanic. Mr. Shields retired from P. Lorillard with 30 yrs. of service. Mr. Shields was a member of Smith Grove Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife of 59 yrs. Dorothy Cleo Atkins Shields, three sisters and one brother.

Surviving is a son James "Donnie" Shields, and wife Susan, of Colfax, a grandson Chad Shields.

Graveside services will be held 3 p.m., Thursday, January 10, 2013 at Sandy Ridge Cemetery with the Rev Chuck Peters officiating. The family received friends yesterday from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Wednesday at Hayworth-Miller Kernersville Chapel and will receive friends at other times at his home.

The family would like to thank Hospice for their assistance in his later days. The family would like to give a special thank you to Kenyatte Malloy, his caretaker. Since October, no better care in such a loving way could have been provided by anyone else. I am sure her presents with him prolonged his life by several weeks by the care and companionship she provided. No one can work their way to Heaven, but if dedication determines your closeness to God's feet, then no one is between my father and God.

In Lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Liberty Hospice Services at 2563 Eric Lane Suite F, Burlington, NC 27215 or to Sandy Ridge Cemetery Fund.
