GREENSBORO — Mr. Samuel Cornelius Stephens departed this life on October 1, 2012, after a courageous battle with a lengthy illness.

A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, October 4, at Forbis & Dick, Guilford Chapel, officiated by Pastor Jeff Paschal.

Born on March 27, 1926, he was a resident of Greensboro and was a devoted member of Guilford Park Presbyterian Church. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII on the carrier WASP. He retired as Vice President and Sales Manager of Hodgin Supply Company in Greensboro. Among his passions were traveling, golf, raising blue birds and enjoying his pets Boo and Penny.

Samuel was preceded in death by his wife Jean, of 51 years; his beloved son, Samuel Cornelius Stephens, II; his parents, Lucille and George Stephens; his brothers, Jim and Buck, and his sister, Jocelyn.

Samuel is survived by his wife, Janice Blackwell Stephens; daughter, Cyndy Freeze and her husband Roger of Danville, VA, their children, Samantha Bronk and husband Eric of Danville, VA, and Calvin Freeze of Richmond, VA. He is also survived by stepsons, Steven and Kevin; four grandsons, Ian, Ryan, Garrett and Henry. He is dearly loved by his nieces and nephews. He is also survived by Jim Gunning, his best friend of over 45 years. Sam held a special place in his heart for a very special lady, Patier Jessup, his caretaker and cherished friend.

Visitation will be held at 10:30 a.m., one hour prior to the service on Thursday.
