GREENSBORO - James Lawrence "Larry" West of Greensboro, NC, died Saturday, September 29, at Wesley Long Memorial Hospital.
Born on April 21, 1949 in Wilmington, NC, he was the son of Rosalie Kennedy West and the late Thomas Edison West.
He was a veteran of the US Navy, serving in aviation attack squadron 34 assigned to the USS John F. Kennedy. He retired from Plantation Pipe Line Company in 2009, with 33 years of service. He was an avid fisherman and golfer, and loved the ocean. He had a keen sense of humor and kept his friends and family entertained with his practical jokes.
Larry was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and son. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife of 32 years, Sherrial Haley West; his beloved daughter, Jodi West White and husband Scott of Richmond, Va.; granddaughters, Lauren Rebecca and Caroline Preston White; brother Thomas E. West, Jr. and wife Bettie Anne of Wilmington; brother Daniel L. West of Simpsonville, SC; sister Susan Marquis and husband Rollin of Stevensville, Md.; and sister Jane Harris and husband Cothran of Wilmington. He had many friends, but was especially close to his circle of devoted friends: Benny, Mike, Grady, Lloyd, and Jerry.
Visitation will be held Thursday October 4, 6 p.m. at Hanes Lineberry N. Elm Chapel. A graveside service will be held on October 5, at 2 p.m. at Oleander Memorial Gardens in Wilmington, NC.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Saint Jude's Children's Hospital, PO Box 1000, Dept.142 Memphis, TN 38148-0142 in Larry's memory.
