GREENSBORO - Mr. Joseph Patrick Zahran, 87, died Wednesday, June, 20, 2012 at Blumenthal Jewish Nursing and Rehab Center.
A mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, June 25, 2012 at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church. Interment will follow in Lakeview Memorial Park.
Mr. Zahran was born on November 13, 1924 in Fayetteville, son of the late Jacob and Lucille Monsour Zahran. He graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill, with a degree in accounting and was a member of the Lacrosse team. He then worked as a special agent for the Internal Revenue Service for 30 years. A U.S. Marine veteran, he served as Corporal in the 5th Marine Division during World War II and fought in the battle of Iwo Jima and was a member of the occupation force during the surrender of Japan. He obtained expert marksmanship level. He was a member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, where he served on the board of directors of the O.L.G. school for many years. He was Scout Master of Troop # 111 and volunteered as accountant and tax counselor at A&T St. University. He enjoyed golf and tennis.
Survivors include his wife, Sally Brent Zahran of the home; children, Joseph Patrick Zahran, II of Orlando, Fla, Jacob John Zahran and wife Sheila Barber of Wilmington and Gina Mary Zahran of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla; step son Kevin W. Stewart and wife Elizabeth of Stokesdale; three sisters, Madeleine Hendon of Dallas, Tx., Lorraine Petersen of Fayetteville, Helen Stadermann of Burlington and Frances D'Amico of Sacramento, Ca.; brother, Sam Zahran of Fayetteville; two grandchildren, Rachel Elizabeth Zahran and Jacob Samuel Zahran; four step grandchildren, Alexander Aaron Stewart, Katelyn Lindsey Stewart, Ashley Michelle Hamilton and Brittany Elizabeth Hamilton.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Farfour Zahran, a daughter, Charlene Mary Zahran, brother, James Zahran, sisters, Alice Zahran, Mary Kannan, Vera Matheson, Rose Bsheer, Catherine Bahouth and Julie Zahran.
The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. Sunday, June 24 at Forbis and Dick, N. Elm Street.
