
BURLINGTON Mrs. Peggy H. Smith, 87, of Edgewood Place, formerly of 2407 Oakwood Drive, Burlington, died June 9, 2012 at Edgewood Place, the Village at Brookwood after a lengthy illness.
She was born on September 10, 1924 in Mount Gilead, NC, the daughter of William Homer and Lillie Greene Haywood, both deceased. She was predeceased by her husband of 57 years, J. Harold Smith.
She is survived by her two sons, James Harold Smith, Jr. and his wife Christine Geissler Smith and William Haywood Smith and his wife Susan Kluttz Smith; three grandchildren, James Harold Smith, III, Robert Cooper Smith and Jamisan Ryder Smith, all of Burlington.
Mrs. Smith received a Bachelors Degree in Music Education in 1945 from Greensboro College, Greensboro, NC. She enjoyed a successful career in the Burlington City School system teaching fifth and sixth grade music. She attended Teachers College of Columbia University, New York, NY, earning a Masters Degree in Public School Music in 1949.
An avid golfer, Mrs. Smith was a member of the Ladies Golf Association at Alamance Country Club for over 50 years.
She was a past President of the Alumnae Association of Greensboro College, an active member of Front Street United Methodist Church, The Coterie Book Club and the Alamance County Service League.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on June 12, 2012 at First Baptist Church, Mount Gilead, NC and the family will receive friends at Rich and Thompson Funeral Service in Burlington, NC on June 11, 2012 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. A graveside service will be held at Pine Hill Cemetery, Burlington, NC at 5 p.m. on June 12, 2012.
