Dr. Charles William Sullivan

GREENSBORO — Charles William Sullivan, 70, died October 27, 2010 after a brief illness. He was the husband of Patricia A. Sullivan, former Chancellor of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, who predeceased him in death.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, November 2, at 11 a.m. at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, 2715 Horse Pen Creek Road, Greensboro.

Charles, affectionately known as Charlie to his family and friends, graduated with a bachelor's degree from Manhattan College in New York and a Master's and Doctorate degree from New York University. All of his degrees were in electrical engineering. Charles worked for 10 years with General Electric in Syracuse, New York followed by 16 years with Texas Instruments in Dallas, Texas. He retired at age 55 to move to Greensboro, North Caroline with his wife Patricia, upon her installation as the first woman Chancellor of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG).

Charles was active in numerous volunteer activities for UNCG including the Friends of the Library. He was an ardent Spartan Fan and love attending games both at home and on the road. In addition to working behind the scenes on behalf of UNCG, he was a long time member of the Kiwanis Club of Greensboro, and Senior Net as well as the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers.

After retirement, Charles was active in developing home automation software using X-10 wireless technology. He organized a web site to distribute the software, which is named Hey-U – a name coined by a colleague who would tell his children "Hey you turn off that light". The current version Hey-U version 2 and is downloadable on the Hey-U web site.

Charles was born on December 28, 1939 in Staten Island, New York.

He is survived by his brother James Burke Sullivan, his wife Ahni Sallaway and their children Julia Sallaway Sullivan and James (Jay) Sallaway Sullivan.

The family wishes to extend its deepest gratitude to the Palliative Care Team of Moses Cones Hospital for their extraordinary compassion and care during Dr. Sullivan's illness.

Family visitation will be held at St. Paul's following the service.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be sent to the Dr. Patricia A. Sullivan and Dr. Charles W. Sullivan Endowed Scholarship Fund, UNCG Excellence Foundation, UNCG, PO Box26170, Greensboro, NC 2402.
