GREENSBORO — Mrs. Roma Thompson Barnett, 100, died February 15, 2013 in her home surrounded by family. A celebration of her life will be held on Sunday, February 24 at 3 p.m. in the sanctuary of Guilford College United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Barnett was born in Cherryville, NC on September 25, 1912 to Will and Fannie Adams Thompson. She was raised in Athens, GA. She met and married William H. Barnett, Sr. in Montgomery, AL. They were married 62 years until his death in 2004. They lived in Opelika, AL most of their married lives where they raised their family and became part of a gentle, caring community. During these years they were blessed to be members of the First United Methodist Church, where they made lifelong friends. In 1993, they moved to Greensboro where they became members of Guilford College United Methodist Church.

Roma was a caring and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She spent her life making a loving home for her family. She enjoyed reading, cross-stitch, and needlepoint. She possessed a beautiful servant's heart.

She was preceded in death by her husband, two brothers, and three sisters. Survivors include her two children, Susan T. Irvin (Jim) of Greensboro and William H. Barnett, Jr. (Deborah Sumner) of Orlando, FL. She also leaves behind four grandchildren, Jeffrey David Irvin (Jaynee) of Fresno, CA, Leigh Anna Irvin of Virginia Beach, VA, Andrew Scott Barnett of Atlanta, GA, Emily Kathryn Barnett of Washington, DC, and four great-grandchildren.

The family is thankful to the staff of Hospice, the caregivers from Home Instead, Dr. Hal Stoneking, and the kind friends who offered support and kindness during her life and final days.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Greensboro, 2500 Summit Ave., Greensboro, NC, 27405 or Guilford College United Methodist Church, 1205 Fleming Rd., Greensboro, NC, 27410.
