

PLEASANT GARDEN Mr. Riley Wilson Clapp, 78, passed away on Monday, August 6, 2012 at Moses Cone Hospital.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, August 9 at Pleasant Garden United Methodist Church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
Riley was born in Guilford County on October 5, 1933. He graduated from Pleasant Garden High School in 1951; served in the United States Air Force from 1951- 1955; attended Guilford College 1955- 1960, where he received a BA Degree in Economics. Riley had many accomplishments and served as an officer for numerous organizations. These included: 1960-1961, North Carolina Health Care Facilities Association (NCHCFA) Secretary/ Treasurer Piedmont District; 1961-1962, NCHCFA President, Piedmont District; 1962-1964, NCHCFA Secretary; 1965-1966, NCHCFA Vice President; 1966-1968, NCHCFA President; 1962-1964, Chairman, Pleasant Garden Kindergarten, Inc. prior to Public Kindergarten; 1964-1966, President, Pleasant Garden Lions Club; 1966, Zone Chairman-Lions Club; 1967-1971, Medicare Advisory Committee, NC Blue Cross Blue Shield; 1967- present, Fellow, American College of Nursing Home Administrator;1968, Advisory Council on Comprehensive Health Planning for the State of North Carolina; 1969, Lion of the Year Award; 1969-1971, Chairman, Pleasant Garden Horse Show; 1970, Nursing Home Advisory Committee of the State Board of Health; 1971, Licensed Nursing Home Administrator; 1971-1973, Volunteer Services Corps. Committee of American Health Care Facilities Association; 1973, NCHCFA- Distinguished Service Award; 1987, NCHCFA- Distinguished Service Award; 1974-1977, Board of Directors, Pleasant Garden Community Center; 1975, Became second generation owner of Clapp's Nursing Center; 1976-1977, President, Pleasant Garden Volunteer Fire Department; 1977-1978, Chairman, NC Chapter American College of Nursing Home Administrators; 1979- present, Commissioner, Pleasant Garden Volunteer Fire Department; Riley chaired or served on virtually every committee of the NCHCFA.
Riley was an avid golfer, enjoyed his poker club and yearly fishing trips. He was a caring man, wonderful father and grandfather.
He was preceded in death by his father, George Wilson Clapp; wife, Laura Dillon Clapp; and sister, Sue Clapp Pike.
Left to cherish his memory are his mother, Mary Riley Clapp; children, Cheryl Coleman and husband Larry of Greensboro; Lisa Hmiel and husband Steve of Pleasant Garden, Hugh Clapp and wife Sandra of Climax; brother, George Donald Clapp of Asheboro; grandchildren, Shane and Tyler Hmiel, Patrick and Alison Coleman, and Chris Clapp.
The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. tonight, Wednesday, at Forbis & Dick Pleasant Garden Chapel.
