DENVER — Ray Alfred Pope, age 83, of Denver, NC passed away Saturday, December 8, 2012 at his residence.

Ray was born October 7, 1929 in Saginaw Michigan the son of the late Mary Shannon Pope and Alfred Luther Pope.

He was a 1947 graduate of Arthur Hill High School in Saginaw, MI and served in the US Army during the Korean War. He was a pitcher for the Chicago White Sox organization and retired from Weyerhaeuser Company. Mr. Pope was elected to the Saginaw County Sports Hall of Fame in 2010. Mr. Pope was a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church.

Preceding him in death was his wife Lorraine Florence "Sandy" Pope on February 21, 1998; two brothers and one sister.

Those left to cherish his memories are his sons John Pope of Greensboro, NC, Tom Pope of Denver, NC and Christopher Pope of Raleigh, NC; daughter Linda Barbour (Mark) of Peachtree City, GA; brother Richard Pope (Janice) of Bridgeport, MI; sisters-in-law Florence Pope of Apache Junction, AZ and Monique Pope of Broomfield, CO; grandchildren Clint Barbour, Lauren Pope, Shannon Barbour and Ray Pope.

Memorial Service: 11 a.m. Wednesday, December 12, 2012 at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church conducted by Rev. Don Phillips with entombment in the church columbarium.

Memorials: Spina Bifida Association of NC, 3915 Grace Ct., Indian Trail, NC 28079 or to Hospice and Palliative Care of Lincoln County, Lincolnton, NC 28092.
