SOPHIA Melvin C. Phillips, 73, passed away Tuesday, January 08, 2013, at the Hospice House of Randolph. He was preceded in death by his wife of 28 years, Kathryn Ives Phillips, and was the loving husband of Mable Lee (Crotts) Phillips to whom he was married for 22 years.
Mr. Phillips was born on October 25, 1939 in Trinity, the son of the late Ira Millard and Lena (Lambeth) Phillips. He was a 1957 graduate of Trinity High School and retired with Yellow Freight after 30 years of service. He remained a member of Teamsters Local 391.
He enjoyed deep sea fishing, traveling, cooking, and attending to his 1 ½ acre garden and supplying vegetables to family and neighbors.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Phillips is survived by a daughter, Karen Phillips Rollins and husband, Dennis of Charlotte; a son, Larry Phillips and wife, Laura of Sophia; two step daughters, Gwyn Liner and husband, Craig of Sophia; and Sherry Nazziola and husband, Dr. Jerry of High Point; a step son, Greg Turner and wife, Shannon of Sophia; two grandsons, Patrick Brentley Warren and Drake Addison Phillips; three step granddaughters, Hilari Liner, Emmalee Eide and husband, Todd, and Lauren Holden and husband, Seth; two step grandsons, Tripp Nazziola, and Brandon Turner; a great granddaughter, Averi Eide; two sisters, Norma Kidd of Staley, and Cindy Oldham and husband, Sam of Mebane; and many nieces and nephews.
A visitation to celebrate Mr. Phillips' life will be held from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. Saturday, January 12, 2012 at Cumby Family Funeral Service, 206 Trindale Road, Archdale.
