LENOIR Mary Nell Thompson Moore ("Mary Nell"), 87, of Lenoir, NC and Charlotte, NC, died at her residence at the Carriage Club in Charlotte on Tuesday, January 1, 2013. Mary Nell was born in Lenoir on May 27, 1925, a daughter of Charles Henderson Thompson and Ursula Hood Thompson.
Mary Nell was a 1946 cum laude graduate of the Woman's College of the University of North Carolina, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree. After graduation, she moved to Atlanta, GA, where she was employed by Delta Airlines. She returned to Lenoir and married Myron Lenoir ("Jack") Moore, Jr., in 1949, to whom she was married for 63 years, until his death in 2012.
Mary Nell was a homemaker and a devoted member of First United Methodist Church of Lenoir, where she was a President of the United Methodist Women and for many years taught the 4-year-old Sunday School class. She was a sustaining member of the Lenoir Service League, and was also a member of the Hibriten Garden Club, the Wise and Otherwise Book Club, the Brush and Palette Club, and several bridge clubs.
In addition to her husband, Mary Nell is preceded in death by her parents, her sisters, Agnes Ruth Thompson and Mabel Thompson Moore, and her son-in-law Steven Calvin Walker. She is survived by her three children - Rebecca Moore Walker of Greensboro, NC, Jane Moore Goeldner and her husband, Kirk Allan Goeldner, of Greenville, SC, and Myron Lenoir Moore, III, and his wife, Cynthia Speas, of Charlotte, NC; her six grandchildren - Steven Williams Walker and his wife, Susan McAllister Walker, of Charlotte, NC, Wesley Gordon Clarke and his wife, Christy Davison Clarke, of Greenville, SC, John McDowell Moore of Charlotte, NC, Mary Kirk Goeldner of New York, NY, Sarah Katherine Moore of New York, NY, and William Robbins Moore of Charleston, SC; and her four great-grandchildren - Katherine McAllister Walker and Elizabeth Moore Walker of Charlotte, NC, and Holden Johns Clarke and Bennett Davison Clarke of Greenville, SC.
A graveside service will be at Blue Ridge Memorial Park, 2017 Wilkesboro Boulevard, Lenoir, NC, on Saturday, January 5 at 2:30 p.m., conducted by Rev. Marietta Smith. The family will receive at the graveside following the service.
