CHARLOTTE — Mary Alice Haynie, 66, of Charlotte, NC passed away peacefully December 28, 2012 at her home. She is survived by her sister, Jane Carolyn DeLuca Hughes and spouse, Mike Hughes; her son, Justin F. Haynie and spouse, Emily Haynie; her three grandchildren, Riley, Kate Hampton, and Alice Bryant (Allie); her nephew, Michael Johnson.

She was born in Durham, NC, to the late Jane Tesh DeLuca and Bernard Benjamin DeLuca and was raised in Mayodan, NC. She graduated with honors from Salem College in 1968 and subsequently had a distinguished thirty-year career with Western Electric and AT&T. Mary Alice was then called to the ministry, graduating from Columbia Theological Seminary in 2003 with a Master of Divinity. This was her true passion, ministering to others with her humor, her warmth, her everlasting caring, and her lifelong love of music. Reverend Haynie became the first female pastor of Southport Presbyterian Church in Southport, NC, serving for five years before moving to the Charlotte area to be closer to family, especially her grandchildren. She was a member of Providence Presbyterian Church.

Her funeral service will be held at Providence Presbyterian Church, 10140 Providence Church Lane, Charlotte, NC, on Wednesday, January 2, 2013, at 2 p.m. A memorial service will also be held on Thursday, January 3, 2013, at 2 p.m. at the Mayodan Moravian Church in Mayodan, NC, followed by burial in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Southport Presbyterian Church, 1025 East Moore St., Southport, NC 28461, or the Levine Cancer Institute, 1025 Morehead Medical Drive, Charlotte, NC 28204.
