
GREENSBORO Leroy James was born in Denmark, SC on September 9, 1916 to Annie Sallie and Mose James. He departed this life on Wednesday February 20, 2013 at Wesley Long Hospital. Leory was preceded in death by his parents; his lovely wife of sixty years, Jessie Mae James; his siblings, Mose, Irene, Bula, Loretha, Clinton, David; and his son, Harry Lee James.
Leroy attended the public school system in Denmark, SC. At a young age he moved to Greensboro, NC where he was raised by his aunt, Flora Estes, who was known as "Aunt Daughter". He was later joined in holy matrimony to Jessie Mae Wagstaff. To this union five sons were born: Moses, William, Charles, Everette, and Harry, who affectionately called him "Da." Leroy was a loving, devoted and protective father who was very proud of "his boys."
Leroy was devoted to his church, which he loved deeply and supported faithfully. His church membership began at a very young age at Lindsey Street Holy Church, which later became Hayes Memorial Holy Church. Leroy was devoted to his church. In fact, he served his church faithfully for over eighty years as the oldest member until his death.
Leroy worked as a professional truck driver for over thirty years, and retired from U.S. Food Services. He also had a passion for volunteering and public service. His community service included assisting at voting polls and working at the senior resource center
Deacon James leaves to cherish his loving memory his sons: Moses, William (Jean), Everette (Elizabeth), all of Greensboro, NC, and Charles of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; a daughter-in-law, Marcia James, of New York; a beloved brother, Charlie James, of Denmark, SC; and a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Monday February 25, 2013 at Hayes Memorial United Holy Church located at 1105 Willow Road, Greensboro, NC 27406. The family visitation will begin at 11:30 a.m. with services beginning promptly at 12 p.m. The interment will follow at Lakeview Memorial Park located at 3600 US Highway 29 North, Greensboro, NC.
