GREENSBORO - Katie Laverne Hairston, daughter of Lucille Hairston and Jerome O'Kennard, was born on December 31, 1944 in Greensboro, North Carolina and departed this life on Friday, February 22, 2013 at Moses Cone Hospital from complications of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease.
Katie attended Guilford County Schools and completed her education in Baltimore, MD. Shortly after graduation, she moved to Philadelphia, PA and later to Hartford, CT. In the early 70's Katie returned to Greensboro where she resided until her death.
She leaves behind her devoted mother, Lucille Hairston of Greensboro, NC; sisters, Janice Vega and Regina Cornwell of Greensboro, brothers, Ronald Hairston of Greensboro and Anthony Hairston of Baltimore, MD; daughters, Rhonda Hairston of Durham, NC and Dawn Horsey of Greensboro; sons Elwood Horsey, Jr. of Baltimore, MD, Darren Horsey of Phoenix, AZ and Robert Daniel Troxler of Greensboro; grandchildren, Amir Brown and Dereck Moses both of Hartford, CT, Destiny Taylor of Greensboro, India Horsey of Baltimore, MD, Myles Farrington of Durham, NC, Jamaria and Danaé Troxler of Greensboro; a great aunt, Erline Shoffner; great uncle, Edward Lee Hairston; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and special friends; Cecilia Davis and Gladys Shipman.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, March 2, 2013 at 12 noon with family visitation from 11:30 a.m.until 12:00 noon at New Light Missionary Baptist Church, 1105 Willow Road, Greensboro, NC.
