GREENSBORO — Joseph (Papa Joe) Speaks Alexander, 66, entered into Glory on March 14, 2013. He had recently battled several acute illnesses and was recovering at Blumenthal Nursing and Rehabilitation.
Joe was born to Lester Clyde and Bonzie Speaks Alexander in Statesville, NC. Joe and his family were active members of Western Avenue Baptist Church. He attended Statesville High School and was active in the wrestling team as well as the area swimming team. Upon graduation, he began his college studies at Pfeiffer College. He later attended Lenoir Community College and graduated Phi Theta Kappa.
At the age of 20, Joe enlisted in the United States Army where he served in the Vietnam War. At the completion of Officers Candidate School, he earned the rank of Captain. His training included Special Forces, Green Beret and was a certified paratrooper. He received numerous medals and commendations while faithfully serving his country; to include two Purple Hearts, and the Silver Star. Joe received an Honorable Discharge in 1970 after being severely wounded in action.
Joe worked as a plant manager for Texfi Manufacturing for many years. He also returned to college in 1976 and received his Bachelor of Science degree from UNC- Greensboro. He was a loving father to his children and a great friend to anyone he knew. He enjoyed fishing, camping and trips to the mountains. He even continued his parachute jumps into his early 50's.
Joe began working at the Bulk Mail Center in Greensboro, NC. His years of service earned him the position of Postmaster where he worked for 15 years prior to retirement.
He is preceded in death by his father and grandparents. He is survived by his mother, Bonzie Alexander; children Laura A. Hargrave (Ken) and David L. Alexander (Nicole) all of Virginia. Papa Joe is the proud grandfather of five: Michael, Brandon, Dustin, Dylan and Nikki and also five great-grandchildren. He is also survived by numerous cousins and Vietnam Veteran "buddies".
The family will receive friends on Monday March 18 from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Hanes Lineberry, 515 N. Elm Street Greensboro, NC.
Burial arrangements are being made for Arlington National Cemetery, Washington, DC.
