GREENSBORO — Jean Ferguson Porterfield passed away Friday, January 25, 2013 at Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Jean was born on March 20, 1927 to the late Samuel J. Ferguson and Jeanie Payne Ferguson. She was also proceeded in death by her husband Erwin L. Porterfield of Burlington, North Carolina. She is survived by her two sons David R. Porterfield and Lee F. Porterfield and his wife Melanie, two grandchildren, Rebecca and Samuel Porterfield, her sister Frances Ferguson Pulliam and her husband Richard Pulliam of Greensboro, a niece Laura Gregory and nephew Richard Pulliam, two great nephews and a great niece. A special thanks to her friend and caregiver Barbara Sanderford and to all the caregivers at Blumenthals Nursing and Rehab Center.

Jean received her bachelor's degree from Women's College and her masters degree in English from University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Jean had a gift for teaching. She taught for over 30 years in the Alamance and Orange County school systems. She earned many awards over the years, including the Honorary Award for contributing so much of her time and talent as coach for the Carolina's Future Problem Solvers Bowl. She enjoyed reading and spending time with her family and friends. Jean was a loving and sweet spirit and will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

A funeral service will be held at Mebane United Methodist Church, 200 South Fourth Street, Mebane, North Carolina, 27302 on Thursday, January 31 at 2 p.m. Burial will follow in Alamance Memorial Park. The family will receive friends prior to the service in the church parlor at 1 p.m. until 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to A. L. Stanback Middle School, 3700 NC 86 South, Hillsborough, North Carolina, 27278.

McClure Funeral Home in Mebane is in charge of arrangements.
