BURLINGTON — Herbert Eugene "Gene" Roney, age 68, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, August 9, 2012 at his home surrounded by his family. He was a native of Durham County and the husband of Laura Leath Beckom Roney who survives.
Gene was employed by Alamance Motors and Dick Shirley Chevrolet for 42 years, where he received numerous awards. He enjoyed his work and made many friends over the years. Gene was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church and a member of the Burlington Harley Owners group.
The family would like to thank Hospice of Alamance-Caswell and the nurses and staff of the Cancer Center for their compassionate care for Gene during his illness.
Survivors include his wife, Laura Leath Roney of the home; daughter, Connie Woody and her husband, Ken of Burlington; son, Michael Beckom and his wife, Tracey of Burlington: grandchildren, Amanda Michael, Maleigha Michael, Katey Beckom and Kolbe Woody; mother, Joy Bell Roney of Burlington: special aunt and friend, Nancy Shebester. He was preceded in death by his father, Mack Roney; wife, Barbara Cox Roney; daughter, Denise Roney Michael and a son, Keith Eugene Roney.
A service to celebrate his life will be held on Sunday, August 12, 2012 at 2 p.m. at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Stewart Crank, Rev. Clarence Toney and Dick Shirley. The burial will follow at Friendship United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Saturday at the funeral home and other times at the home.
Dick Shirley employees and the Burlington Harley Owners Group are asked to be honorary pallbearers and sit together as a group.
