
BURLINGTON Mrs. Eris J. Bennett, 88, of 2216 Canterbury Drive, Burlington died at the Homeplace of Burlington on Wednesday, February 27, 2013 at 11:10 a.m.
A native of Walnut Cove, she was the wife of T. Frank Bennett, who survives and the daughter of Paul Thomas Johnson and Mildred Johnson Elmore, both deceased. She was a graduate of Burlington High School, Class of 42 where she was a majorette in the band. Eris was formerly employed at Western Electric. Later in life, she worked at Williams High School and Hillcrest Elementary School where she was a reading aide. Eris was active in the school PTA and helped organize the first "All Nite After Prom Party" at the YMCA which was very successful. She was also a member of the Burlington Civinette Club. She and her husband chaperoned numerous beach trips for their sons and their friends.
Eris was a member of Webb Avenue United Methodist Church now known as Emmanuel United Methodist Church. She was very active leading the Methodist Youth Fellowship, teaching Sunday School and participating in missions and various other areas of the church. She promoted the installation of sanctuary pews in Emmanuel United Methodist Church. She supervised the purchase of the pews, designed the layout and organized the fund raisers.
In addition to her husband of the home, survivors include three sons, Dave Bennett and wife Esther of Burlington, Tom Bennett and wife Karen of Greensboro and Dr. Scott Bennett and wife Cindy of Elon; and five grandchildren, Captain Matthew Bennett, US Army, Chelsea Brooks, Quentin Bennett, Olivia Bennett and Julia Bennett.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Paul Johnson, Jr.
The funeral service will be conducted at Emmanuel United Methodist Church on Saturday, March 2, 2013 at 3 p.m. by Rev. Neal Salter and Rev. Carolyn Burrus with the family receiving friends from 2 p.m. until 3 p.m. prior to the service at the church. Burial will follow in Pine Hill Cemetery.
