WINSTON-SALEM Cathy Shannon Bennett Hayes, 57, died at her home after a valiant fight with cancer. A funeral service will be at 3 p.m. on Friday, March 1, 2013 at Old Town Baptist Church with Dr. Rick Speas officiating. Interment will take place in Forsyth Memorial Park.
Cathy was born in Rockingham County to Mr. & Mrs. Curtis J. and Joan Elizabeth Frye Bennett Sr. She has been employed as a practice administrator in orthodontics for over thirty eight years most recently with Drs. Chermak and Hanson. She was respected at work by her employers and co-workers as the heart and soul of the office. She was always kind, genuine and a hard worker. She was a member of Stoneville First Baptist Church from birth and from 8th grade until going to college she served as the pianist. She displayed to everyone she met what it means to be a follower of Christ. She has been a member of Old Town Baptist Church since 1986 where she was involved in several activities. She was the youth Sunday school teacher for more than twenty years, sang in the choir, director of WMU for many years and helped start the Ladies Holiday Banquet. She was an active GA and Acteen leader. She loved her church and church family and her extensive service to the church and everything she participated in was always for the glory of God. She loved to plan parties, banquets and weddings. She supported her husband's work in the Hoops 4 Him basketball association always willing to serve in any capacity and took a special interest in helping with the end of season banquet. She loved to tailgate at Wake Forest University sporting events. She enjoyed spending time at Surfside Beach with her family and encouraging her grandsons at their sporting events. She was a wonderful friend and cherished her time with the "Best Buds" Group. Cathy brought joy wherever she went and to whomever she met. As a wife, mother and Nana she was the cheerleader of the family and kept a positive attitude even unto the end.
She is survived by her husband of thirty-eight years, Danny Hayes of the home; daughter and husband, Shannon and Austin Callahan of Winston-Salem and their children Connor and Ethan; mother, Joan Frye Bennett; sister and husband, Sharon and Bob Bailey; and brother Curt Bennett, Jr. all of Stoneville. Also surviving are brother -in-law Kenneth Hayes of Salisbury and Jerry and Beverly Hayes of Winston-Salem; nieces and nephews, Ivey, Tripp, Allee Jo, Jennifer, Hannah, Chris, Susan, Zachary, and Rachael; great nieces and nephews, Jackie, Cassie, Cameron, Josh, Ashley, Will, Sadie and Malorie; and extended family. She is preceded in death by her father, Curtis Bennett, Sr., father and mother in law, Daniel and Ruth Hayes, sisters-in-law, Sue Bollinger Bennett and Nan Hayes; and nephews, Philip Bennett and Hogan Bailey.
The family extends their thanks and gratitude to Dr. Heather Shearer, nurses and staff at Derrick Davis Center at Forsyth Medical Center and Kate B. Reynolds Hospice for their positive attitude and compassionate care shown to Cathy and her family during her illness.
