GREENSBORO - Bertha Gwendolyn Holt, 90, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, February 9, 2013.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, February 12, 2013 at Hanes Lineberry Funeral Home, 6000 High Point Road. Burial will follow at Guilford Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 12:30 p.m. until 1:45 p.m. at the funeral home prior to the service.
Gwen was born December 25, 1922 in Guilford County and was preceded in death by her parents Henry Clyde and Bertha Spencer Holt and brother, Cutler Clyde Holt.
She was a very devoted member of Parkway Baptist Church and the Fellowship Sunday School Class.
She retired after 33 years service as a shorthand reporter in the Criminal Investigation Division of the Internal Revenue Service. She was a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees and The Greensboro Christian Womens Club.
In addition to her family and friends Gwen had three great loves in her life; reading, traveling and animals. During her life she read literally thousands of books including many times through the Bible. Her travels took her to many interesting parts of the world, including four continents, all over most of the United States and many trips to Canada from Victoria and British Columbia on the west coast to Nova Scotia on the east coast. During some of her earlier trips she loved doing things with a bit of excitement and danger, such as riding a mule to the bottom of the Grand Canyon and spending the night; riding in a helicopter over Niagara Falls and swimming in the cold waters of Lake Muskoska in Northern Ontario. She had such a great love for animals and always had a special pet in her home. Any stray who came near her was assured of a good meal. She always said her idea of a perfect job would be looking after baby animals in a zoo.
She is survived by her sister-in-law, Pauline C. Holt of Greensboro; nieces Carolyn (Frank) Mocnik of Fayetteville, NC and Becky (Carl) Bradham of Lexington, SC ; great niece Kristin Mocnik of Charlotte, NC; great nephew Mark (Dawn) Mocnik of Wake Forest, NC; great-great nephews Matthew and Caleb Mocnik of Wake Forest, NC.
The family would like to say a special thank you for the excellent care that Gwen received from ComForcare Home Care and Palliative Care at Wesley Long Hospital and from Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro.
