GREENSBORO — Col. Arthur "Art" B. Shilan, USMC Retired, 81 died Monday, May 14, 2012 at Brighton Gardens Assisted Living. His wife, Ellen Joyce "Joy" Murch Shilan, 80 died Tuesday, May 15, 2012 at Moses Cone Hospital.

A Memorial Mass will be held at 8:45 a.m., Friday May 18, 2012 at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church for Col. Shilan and a Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m., Friday for Mrs. Shilan.

Col. Shilan was born May 20, 1930 in Painesville, Ohio to the late Arthur Shilan and Gladys Burridge Shilan. He was a veteran of the US Marine Corps serving in Korea and Vietnam, retiring after 27 years.

Mrs. Shilan was born October 2, 1931 in Painesville, OH to the late Chauncey Muir Murch and Ellen Barrett Murch. She was an elementary school teacher for 17 years. Mrs. Shilan was a member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church.

Art and Joy were preceded in death by three children: Johnny Shilan, Martha Shilan and Anne Shilan Henderson. Joy was also preceded in death by her three brothers: James, Wayne and Chauncey Murch.

Survivors include son: Stephen Shilan and wife Cynthia of Madison, Virginia; three grandchildren: John, Matthew and Caitlin Shilan; Son-in-law: Jack Henderson of Greensboro, NC; Art's sisters: Barbara Loufman and husband William of Elyria, Ohio, Frances Baker and partner Karan of Shaker Heights, Ohio; Joy's foster sister: Nancy Mackey of Las Cruces, New Mexico.

The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. Thursday, May 17, 2012 at Forbis and Dick-Guilford Chapel. Online condolences may be offered at www.forbisanddick.com.
