
EDEN Mr. Artis Casteen Carter, 88, of 610 Forbes Street passed away on Saturday, December 8, 2012 at the Hospice Home of Rockingham County.
The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, December 10, 2012 at Leaksville Moravian Church. Interment will follow at Ridge View Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Cater was born on December 24, 1923 in Mayodan, a son of Carl Houston and Ollie Perdue Carter, both deceased. He was a retired supervisor for Fieldcrest Mills. He graduated from Leaksville High School in 1940 and played college basketball at Western Carolina University, where he graduated in 1952. He was a US Navy veteran of World War II, having served as a combat airman, and was a crew chief and B24 Liberator in the South Pacific. He was a member of Leaksville Moravian Church and was a charter band member.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Nancy Ellington Carter of the home; his son, Barry Carter and wife, Karen of Eden; his daughters, Donna Carter and husband, David of Callaway, Va. and Gina Slack and husband, Greg of Albemarle, NC; his sisters, Eunice Zimmerman and Sue Moretz; his grandchildren, Jamie Stump and husband, Jeff, Whitney Sigmon and husband, Kevin, Rachel Slack, and Justin Carter and fiancé, Lynne Davis; his step grandchildren, Renee and John Morgan; his great grandchildren, Ella Casteen Stump and Layne Elizabeth Sigmon; and his step great grandchildren, Rowan, Sarah, and Jackson. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Ray Carter, Norman Carter, and William Edgar Carter; and his sisters, Doris Carter and Nancy Jo Carter.
The family wishes to extend their sincerest appreciation to the staff of Hospice of Rockingham County, and to the staff of Day Spring Family Medicine.
The family will receive friends from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. on Sunday afternoon, December 9, 2012 at Boone & Cooke Funeral Home, and other times at the residence.
